In today’s gospel Jesus tells us, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith in me.” My guess is most of us here have something troubling our hearts. Maybe we’re facing health issues, or there are problems at work. Perhaps our family life isn’t as happy as it used to be. Some face addictions. Others suffer misunderstandings. And here’s the thing. Maybe at this very moment our lives are okay, or more than okay. Maybe they’re excellent and we’re living our best lives, thanks be to God. And yet we know that everyone will eventually have to pass through difficult times. That’s life.
But why should we have faith in God if God isn’t solving our problems in the way we want? God never promised our lives would be trouble-free. But God did promise to remain with us in the midst of our problems. How do we know this? Because God became human like us. Jesus knows what it means to suffer, physically and emotionally. Jesus knows our weaknesses, our faults and, yes, even our sins. And loves us anyway. Jesus is the way we must live and the truth we seek and ultimately the life we are called to live.
