Why Do You Seek The Living Among The Dead?

< Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord >

This is what the angel asked the holy women who came to the tomb of Jesus that first Easter morning. All Saturday they wept and prayed and worried if they too would be arrested and killed like Jesus. They also prepared spices and oils to wash and anoint the dead body of the Lord. As the night sky slowly lightened and fresh tears flowed from their eyes, the women made their way to the tomb. They wondered who’d help them roll the stone back from the entrance. As they approached, their heart sank. Where were the Roman guards? The stone was already rolled away. Peering inside, their worst fear was realized: the body of Jesus was missing! Perhaps grave robbers took it. Maybe the owner of the tomb came and moved the body. Or maybe they’d come to the wrong tomb. Then a young man dressed in brilliant white robes spoke: “Why do you seek the living among the dead? You seek Jesus, the crucified. He is not here. He has risen!”

In that moment everything changed. Only after they actually met the Risen Lord and saw his wounds did they realize Jesus was indeed risen from the dead. What does this mean for us? It means death no longer has the last word. Life is stronger than death. Love is more powerful than hate. Not only that, the Risen Jesus no longer lives just in past times. He lives in ALL times, including our time. This means even you can encounter the risen Jesus! But let us not look for him among the dead. He is no longer there. He calls each of us to look for and encounter him wherever there is life, love and laughter. Now it’s our turn to rise.
