Jesus: Best Friend for Life

< Sixth Sunday of Easter >

We all know Jesus as our Lord and Savior. He is also our Master and Teacher. But for those students making their first holy Communion today, Jesus will also be their best friend–for life! You will all have friends throughout your life, beginning with your neighbors and classmates. You will go to school together, play together, and maybe even pray together. You will “hang out” together. You will have adventures. Sometimes you will laugh together. A friend is someone whom you can share your innermost secrets with and they will not judge you. Sometimes you may even cry together. One of the most difficult things you will ever do is say goodbye to your friend. Sometimes they move away or go to a different school. But that’s life. But you know what’s even more difficult than that? It’s when you suffer from an illness or a failure or a disappointment or a punishment and there is no friend to console you or help you bear your sorrow. That’s where Jesus comes in!

From today on, Jesus will not only be with you and for you, he will be part of you! Jesus feeds you with his Body and Blood so no matter where you go, Jesus will be there, to not only comfort you but to strengthen you. There is nothing that you suffer that Jesus doesn’t understand— because he suffered too, just like you! His friends abandoned him, denied him and betrayed him when he needed them most. But Jesus forgave them! And Jesus not only stands ready to forgive you too, but also, through the grace of the Eucharist, to give you the courage and strength to say you’re sorry and ask forgiveness when you’ve done something wrong. There are 613 commandments in the Bible, but Jesus boils them down to just one: love one another. As long as you do this, you will not only become the person God wants you to be, you will have Jesus as your best friend for life!
