Hosanna! Crucify him!

2018년 3월 25일

We are entering into the holiest days of the liturgical year with the solemn commemoration of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The ceremony is filled with symbolism. The procession with blessed palms recalls how people welcomed Jesus by waving branches, spreading their cloaks on the ground before him and shouting, “Hosanna to the son of David” (That is, to the Messiah).

Jesus riding a donkey, instead of a horse, shows he comes as humble servant, not as ruthless ruler. But the more the crowd cheered, the more his enemies seethed with jealousy and rage.

Within days, instead of “Hosanna!” the crowd will yell, “Crucify him!” No doubt these were different people, but the point is we do the same thing all the time. We praise God with our words, then betray him with our actions. Pay close attention this Holy Week. Judas, Peter, Pilate, Herod, Mary Magdalene… which one are you?
