We Are Made In The Image Of Trinity

< The Most Holy Trinity >

The Bible reveals humans are “made in the image and likeness of God.” (Gen. 1:26) Over the millennia, the Jews were one of the first to believe in one supreme God, whom they acknowledged as Creator, Deliverer and Father: defender, provider and teacher. They had a special relationship with God, which they ratified by keeping God’s commandments, given to them though Moses on Mt. Sinai. At first the Israelites believed God lived in heaven, but later God dwelt in the Temple in Jerusalem. When Israel broke the covenant by worshiping other gods, the prophet Ezekiel saw God’s glory leave the Temple and return to heaven. In Luke’s gospel, God’s glory came to earth again when the Virgin Mary agreed to be mother of the Messiah. Only now, she is a living Temple not made by human hands. She gave birth to Jesus, God in human flesh. He is the invisible God made visible. He lived among us, healed us, taught us, died and rose for us. Over time the first Christians came to believe that Jesus wasn’t just the Son of God, but God the Son.

In Jesus, Christians realized the invisible God had come to earth in human form. After he ascended into heaven, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to make God present within us. We acknowledge the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are the same God, whom we call the Blessed Trinity. But if we are created in God’s image, than we too are created to be in loving, life-giving and dynamic relationships. This Solemnity of the Holy Trinity is as much about us as it is about God! It’s almost an inconceivable mystery. That’s why we always bow our heads when we prayer, “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit….” But beyond mystery, belief in the Trinity teaches us that God’s nature is a dynamic and holy relationship. The Father eternally loves the Son, who reflects that love back to the Father, and this love generates the Holy Spirit. This mystery is also about us. We are created in God’s image, share our human nature with Jesus, and have received the Holy Spirit. The Trinity dwells in us and we in the Trinity. It is a holy relationship. And when we enter into loving relationships here on earth, we reflect God’s presence in us.
