Let The Power Of Christ Heal You

< Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time >

A 12-year-old girl is dying. A woman has suffered bleeding for 12 years. The writer of this gospel clearly wants us to think of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Luke places the healing of the woman in the middle of the story about Jesus going to heal the child. The woman suffers more than physically. She suffers socially. She was ritually unclean—fir 12 years! People would avoid coming into contact with her, lest they too become unclean. In her desperation, she secretly touches the hem of Jesus’ robe and immediately feels her wounds heal. But what’s more amazing is Jesus felt the power go out from him! He looks around to see who touched him, and the apostles, as usual, are clueless. Everybody touched him! Yes, but only one person drew out his saving power. The woman is horrified that she has been discovered for breaking the law but Jesus assures her, her faith has made her whole. Then Jesus learns the sick girl has died but goes to her home anyway. The mourners mock him for saying she wasn’t dead. Jesus holds the hand of the dead girl, which is also against the law! Legally, he is now ritually unclean. He doesn’t care. Her raises her back to life.

Sometimes in life we may feel unclean and unworthy because society says we are. Jesus doesn’t care what society —or religion—says about us. He only wants us to be whole, healthy and happy again. We secretly try to touch the hem of Jesus’ robe and, if we do so with a sincere heart, we too will feel the healing power of Jesus in our life. Don’t be fooled or discouraged about what people think or say about you. Don’t let others define who you are. You are a precious child of God in Jesus’ eyes and he wants to raise you up to the fullness of life. Now, like the young girl risen from the dead, go get something to eat!
