Jesus Calms Every Storm

< Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time >

This has been one helluva year: many COVID-19 precautions have been lifted, but the pandemic lingers; political violence threatens to weaken if not destroy our democratic institutions; lies about the origins of the pandemic fill social media; emboldened by the lies, attacks on Asians are on the rise; gun violence kills people almost every day. And these are only the public crises. Each of us face personal setbacks and challenges, whether with money, jobs, health, or relationships. We are in the midst of a frightening storm and it seems like Jesus is asleep even as we appear to be sinking.

With the disciples we cry out, “Lord, do you not care we are drowning?” And like in today’s gospel, the Lord looks at us and shakes his head that our lack of faith is so strong. When Jesus calmed the storm by saying one word, the disciples were astonished. Now they are beginning to realize he is more than a prophet, teacher and healer. He is more than the Messiah. He is God, who controls all nature and who wind and waves obey. Let us therefore not lose heart when it seems like Jesus is asleep, or worse, doesn’t care. The one whom we follow is our savior and our God.
