How To Be A Servant Leader

<Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time>

   Along with church history, Bible studies, pastoral and sacramental ministry, I believe men preparing for the priesthood should volunteer as orderlies in a nursing home or hospital. It would be good for them to offer humble service with a smile, even if it means bathing a patient or helping them clean up after going to the bathroom. Why? Because Christ who calls us commanded us to do so.

According to John’s gospel, at the Last Supper, instead of giving the apostles the Eucharist, Jesus washed their feet–and commanded them (and us!) to wash one another’s feet. Unfortunately this powerful, yet humble, act of service has been relegated to a once-a-year ritual on Holy Thursday instead of an attitude which should permeate our daily actions. It means if we want to follow Christ we must do what he did. There is no task that is too lowly or too beneath us. And anyone who aspires to be a leader in a Christian community must show that they are willing to offer humble service to everyone.
