Eucharist: Source and Summit of Our Faith

< Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time >

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops answered the call from Pope Francis to renew Eucharistic devotion among the people by having the faithful pray the prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas at each Mass. You’ll find that prayer in English in today’s Weekly Bulletin.

Such a prayer is only the first step in renewing Eucharistic devotion. The Catechism calls the Eucharist “the source and summit of our faith. In other words, Catholicism flows from our reception of the Eucharist and empowers us to live lives worthy of so great a gift: the Body and Blood of Christ.

We believe the Eucharist contains the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ. Christ is present in the Eucharist. We emphasize this truth with candles, incense, bows and genuflections.

But the best way to acknowledge Christ present in the Eucharist is to go out and live lives worthy of Christ’s presence in the Sacrament, in the church, in us, and through us, in the world.
