“Come, Have Breakfast!”

< Third Sunday of Easter >

Last week we heard the gospel where Thomas was not present with the other disciples when Jesus first appeared after the resurrection. You might say Thomas is the patron saint of those who miss Mass on Sunday! At first Thomas expressed doubt and thought the others were either drunk, delusional or hallucinating. But something wonderful came out of his doubt: when Jesus appeared again, he invited Thomas to touch his wounded hands and Thomas exclaimed: “My Lord and my God!” It was the honest doubt by Thomas that lead to the greatest confession of faith: Jesus is God!

According to the gospel of John, every time Jesus appeared was on a Sunday. The lesson for us is clear: our Sunday Mass should be a special time set aside for us to encounter the Risen Lord in community. But as today’s gospel shows, the disciples also encountered him by the lakeside while they were fishing and Jesus even cooked and served them breakfast! In other words, while we should expect Jesus to be with us during Mass, we should also expect to meet him as we go about our daily lives—even at Sunday brunch or while we go fishing! In this way, our hearts and minds are open to the possibility of finding Jesus everywhere and in everyone.
