Becoming The Body Of Christ

< Solemnity of Corpus Christi >

Jesus could have chosen anything as his memorial, to help his followers remember him and his teachings. But he wanted more. He wanted to live on in his disciples so they could not only live on in him, but become him. He didn’t just choose an object, he chose an action: take, bless, break, share, eat — become! The Body of Christ is a sacrament of transformation. Bread and wine become Christ’s body and blood, and these become us, and we, in turn, become Christ! Like the hymn says, “This bread that we share is the body of Christ, this cup of blessing his blood…when we love one another as Christ has loved us, we become God’s daughters and sons, we become for each other the bread, the cup, the presence of Christ, the Lord!”

But the holy transformation doesn’t stop there. Our faith isn’t just for God to sanctify us, but for God to sanctify the world through us. At Mass, we hear the Word of God instructing us what to do and how to live according to God’s will. At times it seems impossible. Love our enemies? Forgive 70 times seven? Who can do this? But then we eat the body of Christ and it gives us the grace, strength and courage to live gospel values today because, along with St. Paul, we now say: “We have been crucified with Christ and the life we now live is not ourselves but Christ living in us.” Eucharistic adoration should inspire us to live out this mystery. Every day we are called to die more and more to ourselves so that Christ might live in us. This Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is our calling and our destiny.
