Hosanna! Crucify Him!

< Palm Sunday of The Passion of The Lord  >

God willing this will be our last Holy Week during a pandemic. It’s been a long thirteen months. It hasn’t just been inconvenient, with masks, vaccines, lockdowns and zoom meetings, it has been tragic, with 560,000+ of our fellow citizens dead, their families in mourning, not to mention millions more who got sick and have yet to fully recover. And the whole world is going through this time of crisis. Against such a backdrop we enter into our second Holy Week with COVID-19 as the uninvited and invisible guest. We read the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and shout “Hosanna to the Son of David!” Yet no sooner do we start the Mass than we join an angry mob calling for Jesus to be crucified.

Historically these were probably not the same people. Nevertheless we cannot escape the unsettling feeling that in our lifetime, and most likely many times, we will go along with the crowd; sometimes praises Christ and sometimes cursing him. Jesus came to be with us in our messy humanity so that he might share with us his glorious divinity. During Holy Week we follow our Lord during the final days of his life on earth. We enter into his Passion (suffering) through the Eucharist, which commemorates Jesus last supper, crucifixion and resurrection, we allow ourselves to be transformed that we might enter into the reign of God, here and now.
