To Go Higher You Must Go Lower

Some years ago there was a interesting movie called “The Poseidon Adventure”. (See if you can see it on YouTube, Netflix or DVD!) A huge tsunami overturns a cruise ship and flips it upside down, so the the decks are below the surface and the hull and smokestacks are above water. Inside the ship, everything was topsy-turvy. The floors were over the passengers’ heads and the ceilings were under their feet. They realized if they wanted to be rescued they had to go to the bottom on the ship. In other words, to go down they needed to go up!

That movie is a great analogy for our world today. In case you haven’t noticed, EVERYTHING seems upside down. How then can we be saved in such utter confusion? As usual, Jesus provides the answer. We need to be humble if we want to be exalted. We need to serve if we want to rule. We need to go down to go up!

Jesus did not come to be served but to serve. We who claim to follow Jesus must therefore do what he did. There is no social position so high that we are above doing something lowly. After all, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. That was the lowly job of a servant, not that of a master. But if Jesus did it, we too should always be willing to help one another, especially if we occupy a high position in the community.
