Made In The Image Of Love

< The Most Holy Trinity >

The book of Genesis reveals that God created humans in the divine image and likeness. The means each human being is in some way a reflection of God. Sin may distort the image and bad habits might obscure the likeness, but neither sin nor bad habits can destroy God’s image in us. Today’s feast of the Holy Trinity reveals the mystery that there is one God in three divine Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This mystery is so profound and so holy that when we pray “Glory to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit…” we bow our heads. We bow because the Trinity is the image and likeness of God in which we were made.

What does Trinity tell us about God—and ourselves? God exists as set of holy relationships. God is, in fact, a community. We humans, likewise, experience the fullness of life and love in holy relationships and in community. The book of Genesis also says “It is not good for the man to be alone.” Thus, by joining with a spouse in a holy relationship we help to restore creation to its original goodness. All of us here live Trinitarian lives: We are sons and daughters. We are spouses. We are siblings. We are also friends, classmates, coworkers and neighbors. Like God we are one being, but we experience the fullness of life by sharing ourselves with those we love. Thus, this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity is not only about God but about us. We cannot help but bow before so intimate and so profound a mystery.
