Keep Mass In Christ’s Mass!

< The Nativity of the Lord >

Did you know the word “Christmas” was originally “Christ’s Mass”? Over the centuries we put the words together and dropped an ‘s’ to create the popular word for the feast the church calls the Nativity (birth) of the Lord. We should not be so overwhelmed by all the busyness, rushing about, parties, nonstop Hallmark movies, buying, exchanging, and returning of gifts to forget that the purpose of this holiday is. God, the all mighty and all merciful, became human— just like us. In a certain sense, we can say we share a common calling with God: to live a totally human life reflecting the presence of God in our world and in our lives.

So besides all the lights and stars and songs that surround Christmas, take a few moments today in silent gratitude for everything that makes you human: your talents, relationships, conscience, memory, weaknesses, failures, disappointments and dreams. All of it. And offer even these to the Christ Child, who blessed them all when he became human so many years ago. Going forward from this most holy day, let us strive not only to keep Christ (and Mass) in Christmas, but more importantly to keep Christ in Christian. Happy Christ’s Mass to
