You Heard God’s Voice. Now What?

< Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time  >

The response to the psalm today is “If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your hearts.” This presupposes we can hear the voice of God every day. We can hear God’s voice in a homily at Mass and also during the readings from scripture. Maybe in the words of a hymn or even silent prayer before the tabernacle. But God speaks to us all the time! And not just in church. God speaks to us through TV, radio and even social media. God speaks to us through other people: family, friends, teachers, coworkers, even beggars. How do we know? Because God has been speaking to us for millennium, through creation, through even personal experiences. In a word, God speaks to us ALL the time!

The question is: how do you respond when you hear God’s voice? Are you even aware you hear God? The psalmist warns us not to harden our hearts in response to God’s voice. In other words, our sins, our doubts, outspokenness cannot prevent us from hearing God’s voice, but they do prevent us from responding to the voice of God we hear. You are all here today in response to God’s voice! What is God calling you to do today? Or with your life? You are here for a purpose, no matter how small and insignificant it may be. When we do God’s will our lives become fulfilled, exciting and meaningful. Prepare to hear God’s voice at any time any day, and then respond, “Here am I Lord, I come to do your will.”
