God’s Love Makes Our Families Holy

< Feast of the Holy Family >

No sooner do we celebrate God becoming human in Jesus than the church points out he not only was born but he was born into a human family. All families have difficulties and face hardships. The Holy Family was no different. The gospel tells us that Joseph was planning on divorcing Mary because the child she carried wasn’t his. It took the intervention of an angel to convince Joseph his beloved wife had not been unfaithful to him. Then Mary giving birth in a stable, the Holy Family fleeing to Egypt, Mary and Joseph losing the boy Jesus for three days–these are just some of the difficulties they faced.

Our families are no different. Although the angels don’t help us resolve our problems, still the church is here to support us in our time of need. We can take comfort from the example of the Holy Family who loved one another and had faith that God would help them. As I often remind you, what makes a family holy (whether Jesus, Mary and Joseph, as well as our own) is not the absence of problems but the presence of God.
